The school will definitely be running at least one bronze casting short course and will add a casting furnace and setup to the tools available to students at the school. Details of course dates and outlines forthcoming.

The demonstration is going to focus on both marine and artistic castings with boat builders Peter Gron and Quill Goldman.

Bronze Casting

The event is being held ahead of the SBSS’s upcoming bronze casting short course where students will learn how to cast their own patterns.

Peter and Quill will be preparing and casting from 1-3pm on both Saturday and Sunday at the school.

The demo is free and all are welcome. Please stop by and see how casting is done!

Introduction to Woodworking for Women - Silva Bay Shipyard School

The Silva Bay Shipyard School is excited to offer a second round of Introduction to woodworking for women taught by local woodworker Jan Sabine. This two-day course will teach participants shop safety, use of basic woodworking tools and an introduction to power tools while working on a small project that will be taken home at the end of the weekend.  Through our short courses we hope to foster involvement in the Silva Bay Shipyard School by encouraging members of our community to get involved in woodworking and the shipyard school.  Participants from Nanaimo and surrounding areas are encouraged to join us, please inquire about shuttle service to Silva Bay from the ferry terminal on Gabriola.

Price: $90, all materials and tools provided

Join us on December 19th

This one day course will instruct students in the art of framing and matting artworks. Each student will make their own frame and matte for a specific work of art. This class is open to all levels of experience.

The cost of the workshop is $85 – which includes all materials for up to a 12″x16″ frame.
