STELLA MARIS V

The 39 foot sloop, Stella Maris V, was recently donated to the Silva Bay Shipyard School Society and will be the center piece of the new Restoration Courses being planned for the Spring of 2012.

Historic Significance
Stella Maris V was designed and built by shipwright and yacht designer Stanley C. Huntingford in the early 1950’s. Some of Huntingford’s well-known designs include the Fortune 30, Maple Leaf 42, 45, 48 and 54, the Cooper 416 and the True North 34.
The Huntingford family donated the boat to the Silva Bay Shipyard School Society on the understanding that we will undertake the required restoration work and that the Stella Maris V will be well cared for and will become “part of who we are and what we do” at the Shipyard School.

The Silva Bay Shipyard School Society sees the Stella Maris V as a wonderful opportunity to;

preserve a part of B.C.’s Maritime history,

provide a hands-on venue for the students at the Shipyard School to learn the intricacies of ship’s cabinetry and joinery as well many other facets of wooden boat restoration,

display the work of our students at the various wooden boat events in B.C. and Washington with the aim of attracting potential students to the Shipyard School,

use the Stella Maris V as a “mother ship” for on the water activities involving the boats and students of the Shipyard School,

expose more of our local community, adults and children, to the wonders of messing around in wooden boats by offering day sailing trips on Stella Maris V during the summer months

The Boat

Stella Maris V is sloop rigged and has an overall length of 39 feet. Length on the water line is 28 feet, maximum beam is 10 feet 6 inches, overall displacement is 18,600 pounds and she draws 6 feet 7 inches.

The hull is carvel planked of 1 3/8th yellow cedar on oak frames. The deck is constructed of 2 inch yellow cedar. The hull and deck are silicon bronze fastened. Stella Maris V has a fir mast and an aluminum boom. She has an impressive inventory of nearly new racing sails pirated from a Petersen 35. The sail area of the main and #1 Genoa is 755 sq ft.

The MV U&I has been the focus for the last two Ships Cabinetry and Joinery courses and now boasts new hatches, doors, cabin sole, deck heads, etc. As such we have reached a point where all the major projects which could be assigned to students have been completed. Rather than remove some of this work to make way for additional students projects we have been able to find a new and caring owner who intends to both keep the vessel in Silva Bay and follow on from where we left off. While this vessel was used in the Ships Cabinetry program a team of volunteers led by Jerry Regimbal looked after the basic maintenance, bottom and topsides paint, fitted thru hull echo sounder, rewired the mast and running lights, serviced the engine cooling system etc. This transition now paves the way for a new boat, the Stella Maris V which will not only be the focus of the Ships Cabinetry and Joinery course but will also pave the way for a “restoration” program starting early 2012.
